5 Vows: Principles And Teaching Of Jainism
The five ethical duties of a Jain are called five vows.
A Jain undertakes the following Five vows :
#1 Non - Violence (NOT TO KILL)
Ahiṃsa- The highest ethical duty in Jainism"intentional is non-violence" or "noninjury": The first major vow taken by Jains is to cause no harm to other human beings, as well as all living beings (particularly animals). This applies not only to one's actions but demands that one be non-violent in one's speech and thoughts.
#2 Truth(NOT TO LIE)
Satya-"truth": By Taking this vow m A Jain abides to always speak the truth. Neither lie, nor speak what is not true, and do not encourage others or approve anyone who speaks an untruth.
#3 Non - Stealing(NOT TO STEAL)
Asteya- "not stealing": A Jain should not take anything that is not willingly given. Additionally, a Jain mendicant should ask for permission to take it if something is being given.
#4 Celibacy(AVOID SENSUAL PLEASURES)
Brahmacharya - "celibacy": This vow mans to Restrain yourself from sex and sensual pleasures. For Jain laypersons, the vow means chastity, faithfulness to one's partner.
#5 Non - Possessiveness (AVOID MATERIAL POSSESSIONS)
Aparigraha- "non-possessiveness": This vow is to avoid craving and greed. This includes non-attachment to material and psychological possessions. Jain monks and nuns completely contempt property and social relations, own nothing and are attached to no materialistic thing.
