According to Bhagavad Gita, The gross physical body of a living being is controlled by the mind, intelligence and ego. This composes the subtle body.

The various focal points in this subtle body are called "Chakras"

According to Hindu sources, There are 6 or even seven points (Chakras) in the human body. 

Buddhist texts mention only five Chakras.


In kundalini yoga, the following techniques are used to focus on transmit subtle energy through the Chakras


  • Breath Exercises
  • Visualizations
  • Mudras
  • Bandhas
  • Kriyas
  • Mantras 


The Seven Chakra System

These 7 chakras are embedded inside the body at 7 different points along the spinal column.
These Chakras are the source to distribute life energy (Prana) to the body. They are connected with various body parts and glands.

Sahasrara. - Crown Chakra

Location - Topmost Chakra in the subtle body, located in the crown of the head.
Significance -  
If the yogi is able to raise his energy to this point The state of Nirvikalpa Samadhiis experienced.
One can have powers of transforming into the divine and being able to do whatever as per wish.
The highest spiritual center and the state of pure consciousness, within which there is neither object nor subject.
Symbol - The chakra is symbolized by a lotus with one thousand multi-colored petals

Ajna Guru Chakra or Third-Eye Chakra

Location -Believed to be located between the eyebrows, located behind it along the subtle (non-physical) spinal column.

Significance -  
It is considered the eye of intuition and intellect
it is responsible for sending sense perceptions to the higher chakra.
On meditating upon this Chakra One can quickly enter another body at will and to become omniscient.
it is at this point that the two sides Nadi Ida (yoga) and Pingala are said to terminate and merge with the central channel Sushumna, signifying the end of duality, the characteristic of being dual (e.g. light and dark, or male and female).
Symbol - it is symbolized by a lotus with two petals.

Vishuddha Vishuddhi, or Throat Chakra

Location - The base of the subtle body throat

Significance -  
Creativity and Self-Expression. known as the purification center.
By meditating this chakra One can attain-


  • The vision of the three periods, past, present, and future;
  • Freedom from disease and old age;
  • Destruction of dangers
  • The ability to move the three worlds

It is associated with the element of space (akasha) and has the seed syllable of the space element Ham at its center. 
Symbol - It is symbolized as a sixteen-petaled lotusThe 16 petals covered are covered with the sixteen Sanskrit vowels

Anahata Heart Chakra

Location - Behind the heart

Significance - Considered to be the seat of the Jivatman (the essence of life force )and Parashakti(pure consciousness and power ). In the Upanishads, this is described as a tiny flame inside the heart.  
It is also associated with 


  • Love and Compassion
  • Charity to others 
  • Psychic Healing.

By practicing this Chakra - One can 


  •  becomes a lord of speech
  •  he is dear to women
  •  his presence controls the senses of others
  •  can leave and enter the body at will


It Represents a union of the male and female as well as being the esoteric symbol for the element of air. Yam is the seed mantra of air, which is at its center.

Symbol - It is symbolized by a lotus with twelve petals. Within it is a yantra of two intersecting triangles, forming a hexagram, symbolizing an esoteric symbol for the element of air (Vayu).

Manipura Nabhi Chakra or the Solar Plexus/Navel Chakra

Location - Navel region along the subtle body's spinal column


Significance - 

The center which radiates 'prana' throughout the entire human body. It is associated with the power of fire and digestion, as well as with the sense of sight and the action of movement. 

One is said to attain the power to save, change or destroy the world by meditating this chakra.

The intermediate stage of self-discovery.Ram is the seeds syllable for the fire which is at its center.

Symbol -This chakra is represented as an upward pointing triangle representing fire in the middle of a lotus with ten petals.

Svadhishthana or Sacral Chakra

Location - Sacral chakra believed to be located at the root of the sexual organ along the spine in the subtle body.

Significance - 
It is connected with the sense of taste and with reproduction.
You can get freedom from enemies, eloquence, and clarity ("words flowing like nectar in well-reasoned discourse"), loss of fear of water by meditating this Chakra

The sacral chakra is represented with a lotus within which is a crescent moon symbolizes the water element. The seed mantra in its center is Vam representing water.

Symbol -It is symbolized as a six-petaled lotus.

Muladhara or Root chakra

Location - Root Chakra located at the base of the spine in the coccygeal region of the subtle body.

kundalini - the divine energy rests here 
Significance -The foundation of the "energy body"The seed syllable is Lam for the earth element (pronounced lum).
By practicing this Chakra -One can become


  • Lord of speech 
  • An Adept in all kinds of learning
  • He becomes ever free from all diseases, 
  • His inmost Spirit becomes full of great gladness. 

Symbol -It is symbolized as a four-petaled lotus with a yellow square at its center representing the element of earth.
