Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Meaning And Benefits

Lord Shiva is one of the major deity in Hinduism. 
Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is associated with him.
It is also known as "Great Death-conquering Mantra".

Lord Shiva is known to have 3 eyes. 
That's the reason, sometimes it is also called a Tryambakam Mantra. 

The mantra is also mentioned in Indian Vedas, Hindus most sacred scriptures -  
  • Rig Veda VII.59.12, 
  • Yajur Veda III.60, 
  • Atharva Veda XIV.1.17.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Meaning

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra reads: 

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। 
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥

oṃ tryaṃbakaṃ yajamahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam 
urvarukamiva bandhanan mṛtyor mukṣīya ma'mṛtat

  •  (aum) - auspicious and sacred syllable Aum in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. 
  • त्र्यम्बकं (tryaṃbakaṃ)- the three-eyed one
  • यजामहे (yajamahe) - we worship, we sacrifice
  • सुगन्धिम् (sugandhim) -  the supreme being who is fragrant and virtuous
  • पुष्टिवर्धनम् (puṣṭi vardhanam)- The one who is the bestower of nourishment, wealth, perfection".
  • वर्धन (vardhana) - increase, growth
  • उर्वारुकम् urvarukam - fruit, a kid of cucumber 
  • बन्धनान् (bandhanan) - from bondage, from the stalk/stem prior meaning of "from bondage" resonates here as the fruit is a simile for the worshipper being released from the bondage of death.
  • मृत्योः (mṛtyoḥ) -from death
  • माऽमृतात् (ma 'mṛtat) - not  from immortality

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Benefits : 

  • Improves overall well being - takes care of mental, emotional and physical health
  • Gives a long life to the person who truly worships Lord Shiva with this mantra. Mantra is also chanted in Japa Homa (Havan) to get desired results
  • The energy protects its devotee from accidents or untimely death. Mantra re-links consciousness to its deeper and more abiding nature and repetition of the mantra constitutes Japa, the practice of which develops concentration that leads to a transformation of awareness
  • Also known as Moksha mantra which bestows longevity and immortality. Vibhuti denotes the sacred ash which is made out of burn wood in Hindu rituals. Hindu devotees apply Vibhuti traditionally as three horizontal lines across the forehead and various other parts of the body to Honor God Shiva. Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is chanted while doing so. It is believed to destroy your bad karma, grief, and fear
  • Helpful for wealth.
  • Prosperity in the family. 
  • Progress in life.
